Travel Days & Dawson City, YT July 14th - 16th

July 14th
Denali State Park to Fairbanks to Tok
At the Alaska Veteran's Memorial at Byers Lake. The statue points to the elusive Denali (which still was not visible).

In the Byers Lake there was a  posting for bears, we didn’t see them even if we were on the outer edge of the camping loops.

Our spot Dogwood 11 (D11). Yes, Lars is enjoying morning fire with a mosquito net hat.

As we were leaving the park to hook up the Jeep to the RV we noticed that we had some metal fatigue where the tow bar connects to the bumper of the Jeep.  Lars decided to try it and watch it closely in the RV camera, but after a short distance it was a no go. If it were to break off that Jeep would more than likely hit into the back of the RV and that would be a really bad day. So we disconnected and drove separately to Fairbanks hoping to get it fixed to no avail. Our next choice was to drive Tok, AK and find a welding shop.

July 15th
Tok to Chicken to Dawson City (back in Canada) after beefing up the Jeep bumper at the RV repair shop.
Jeep is towable again
Thor is exhausted from vacationing

Today’s travel will take us from Tok through Chicken (Yes, Chicken, AK), on the Taylor Highway (Hwy 5) and northeast to the Top of the World Highway (Hwy 9). This is part of the Klondike Loop over to Dawson City where we will catch the George Black Ferry to get across the mightily Yukon River.
Pedro Dredge No. 4 in Chicken, AK where gold mining is still very active.

Views of the South and Walker Fork of the Fortymile River where there are 1000 foot  drop-offs , no guardrails, and tight curves.

The views of the Top of the World road on the Canadian side were expansive, imagine if the sun were shining.

The rain and Taylor "highway" in the rain lead to extremely dirty Jeep & RV conditions

Literally rocks dumped out from the screen between the Jeep & RV.

View from the RV front windshield while crossing the Yukon on the ferry at Dawson City

July 16th Around Dawson City
Well the forecast was for 80% rain, luckily it was a mix of sun and clouds.
Had to get the highway grime off from yesterday's rain and highway driving

Dawson City & Yukon River from atop the Midnight Dome. On June 21st at midnight the sun barely dips behind the Ogilvie Mountains to the North

Now this is a park bench...atop the dome. There is a picnic table behind it that can hardly be seen

Yukon River from the Midnight Dome
Lunch at the Eldorado Hotel - The Sluice Box Lounge
Permafrost is bad for architecture

Lars would like to go in but they aren't open

Sling those doors open and order an Ice Fog from Yukon Brewing

This is where the dare to kiss the famous sourtoe cocktail happens.. A shot of honey whiskey and a mummified human toe are served at this Downtown Hotel.
